Doodling your way to Success

Doodling Basics

Doodling is accomplished during mindless sketching or aimless drawing while the doodler's attention is focused elsewhere. The abstract formulations may develop as a means to overcome stress during a disruptive or unnerving phone call. Children doodle in the classroom and adults doodle during lectures to escape boredom or perhaps to think independently from the lecturer. What does all of this doodling mean, and how can absent-minded doodling lead to success?

A doodle is a scribble or full-blown pictorial drawing created during a period of "no mind." Doodling is actually a component of hand-writing analysis, in the study of graphology. It is true that a picture paints a thousand words, and that fully applies to doodling, perhaps more so. Graphology enables us to perform a depiction of character and to analyze personalities. The act of doodling often takes place while we are waiting for something unrelated to happen

The resulting doodle may reveal our emotions or solutions to plaguing issues during the time of its creation. Some believe that if the image of the famous Sengai (overlapping square, circle, and triangle) painting is formulated from a continuous stroke, it will enable the answer to come during absence of disruptive and potentially impure thought. The Sengai painting, representing the three fundamental forms of the universe is believed the most important painting in Zenga Art. Was Sengai merely doodling in a state of "no mind" when the images appeared?

Doodling takes place rather spontaneously, on any handy surface, and in any available manner. The doodle might be created when a child uses a finger to sketch lines in the condensation of a window. It happens whenever the urge takes us over and there is an available implement and medium. We may have a favored doodle that we create repeatedly. Typically a doodle is created in relation to an emotion such as fear, disgust, anger, and so on. The act of doodling releases the emotional tension. Doing something physical while wrestling with a mental concern can be a form of stress reduction. Even those who do not doodle as a rule, will exhibit some other form of behavior or physical habit. Doodling does not always connote anxiety. It often reveals a show of humor or enlightenment. The doodler may possess an adventurous spirit.

3Ps of Doodling Analysis

According to graphologists, characteristics of placement, pressure, and practice tell us a great deal about the doodler's personality and emotional state of mind.

Placement

Where the doodle is placed is a part of its analysis. Is it placed to the left, center, right, top, or bottom of a sheet of paper? Is it placed somewhere in between these spaces? What does placement mean?

Placed at the left side of a sheet of paper, the doodler is "past oriented." This individual is private minded, thought to be reserved and cautious, someone who is not an early adopter, perhaps. This individual may take a little longer to warm up to others or reveal their personality in public places. Their past may be a contributing factor in this pensive behavior.

Placed in the center of a sheet of paper, the doodler is "present oriented." This individual is professional minded, thought to be an extrovert, someone who seeks the limelight. This individual may seek reassurance and support from trusted others.

Placed to the right side of a sheet of paper, the doodler is "potential oriented." This individual is public minded, thought to be outgoing and socially motivated. This individual is more concerned with the future than with the past or the present. These are progressive thinkers who function best in the company of others, a team player.

Placed to the top of a sheet of paper, the doodler is a more "positive thinker" with a high level of enthusiasm. This individual is an innovator, consistently devising new approaches, concepts, and solutions.

Placed to the bottom of a sheet of paper, the doodler is a more "negative thinker" with a low level of enthusiasm. This individual is less willing to share or propel ideas forward.

Pressure

The degree of pressure applied to the doodling effort connotes yet another realm for analysis. Heavy pressure reveals responsiveness and controlled aggression. This individual may reveal a temper when treated in a manner perceived as unfair or incorrect. Medium pressure reveals a reasonably well-balanced nature. Light pressure reveals a receptive and sensitive character. This individual is someone who is easily influenced. Erratic pressure reveals emotional instability. This individual is someone whose temperament fluctuates and/or this individual is in an unreliable and untrustworthy state.

Practice

Doodlers practice a wide range of techniques when doodling, each reflecting upon the doodler's personality and/or state of mind. Repeating the same doodle, shading, line application, and the use of color are among the variations. Those who repeat the same image over and over again on the page are in a mood that rules the moment. This individual is being emotionally and mentally compulsive. The moment is not a good time for serious and impartial decision making where others are concerned. Repeatedly shading in parts of the doodle indicates that the doodler bears differing anxieties such as fear. This individual is in a state of negativity. The shading can be accomplished according to the implement. If color is available, its use reveals a bit more about the doodler. Red indicates a heightened mood. Blue suggests a calmer more reflective mood. Green reveals envy or resentment. Yellow indicates financial or health concerns. Brown shows a need for security. Purple shows inconsistency or self-importance. Grey shows impartiality or indifference. Black shows anxiety or pessimism. Placing a line under images indicates that the doodler is seeking balance. Placing a line over images indicates that the doodler is seeking refuge, perhaps from a superior's wrath. When doodles comprise varied designs, this is indication that the doodler has diverse talents, a good imagination, and varied interests. A dominant design or pattern may reveal the source of an issue.

Favorable Techniques

Graphologists tell us that an individual can change or correct a personality deficit by redeveloping handwriting, adopting the more favorable strokes. The same holds true for doodling. If we practice the more favorable doodling techniques, we should likewise be able to enhance or modify our state of mind, if not our personality in general. Exhibiting the more favorable behaviors would enable us to become more likeable as well as someone more likely to be promoted.

Favorable techniques can be abstracted from the points illuminated concerning the placement, pressure, and practice in our doodling behaviors, making it simple to focus on the more desirable combination as may be needed for accomplishing the desired state of mind.

Doodling in the top, right corner of the sheet of paper means you are a potential oriented and a positive thinker who is outgoing and progressive. Applying medium pressure means you are well balanced. Varying your image means you are not stuck in the moment or mentally compulsive. Avoiding repeated shading of the same sections means you will avoid anxiety and fear, and you will be even more positive. Using blue ink will create a calming affect rather than using a pencil, which provides a black affect, connoting pessimism. Additionally, underlining your doodle means you are seeking balance rather than seeking to hide out.

Using the more favorable doodling techniques as interpreted here just may help you to visualize your behavior as being one that is more receptive and open. Among the possible combinations, which personality type would you hire? Which combinations would make sense in a sexually charged environment? Which would help a timid individual become more aggressive? In each case success is a targeted outcome, depending upon the individual and presented circumstances. Doodling your way to success may be a simple matter of placement, pressure, and practice while placing your thoughts elsewhere.

Imagine talking on the telephone to an irate client, an antagonistic family member, or a pesky neighbor while doodling a calming image. It might take a few quick thoughts before the doodling implement lands down on its target medium to set the desired technique in motion. Once landed in the targeted section of the paper, to shade or repeat sections, applying pressure, and using coloration may be all that is left to master.

While there are no guarantees for the outcome, it is up to the doodler to give serious thought to the techniques applied in order to obtain the desired result. Before trying this or other mind altering approach, it is best to become sufficiently knowledgeable independently. What is presented here is a culmination of my own findings on the matter of doodling analysis. There is much more to learn. For instance, the picture drawn has implication. An image of a bird might mean that you desire to get away or escape. Drawing faces or body parts have their own implications. Doodling appears to be an art and a science open for much investigation in order to relate the undertaking to success.

Handwriting Analysis

Take some time to examine your handwriting as well. Does your handwriting indicate you possess one or more of the "hell traits?" For instance, if the upper stem of your letter "d" is balloon-like, you have a tendency toward paranoia. If your letter "o" contains an extra loop, there is an indication of dishonesty. If your letter "t" is crossed very low, it equates to low self esteem. An individual with all of these may be someone who is not very trustworthy, tending toward blaming others for failure, and perhaps exercising misrepresentation of self and others in the process.

Examine and practice effective handwriting in conjunction with using the desired doodling techniques for perhaps the best results in your personality correction, and potentially lead to greater success. Handwriting and doodling analysis are both performed by the graphologist. If you fear that you possess negative traits resulting from your preliminary doodling and handwriting analysis, it may be advisable to seek the advice of a qualified practitioner.
